A new strontium vanadium sulfide, SrV2S5, has been successfully synthesized. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern has been indexed on the basis of a rhombohedral cell with hexagonal lattice constants ofa= 3.314 andc= 35.023 Å. However, the electron diffraction measurements show that the structure is more complex and has an unidentified superstructure. The specimens of SrV2S5show no indication of superconductivity down to 2K. The resistivity is low, semiconductive, and weakly dependent on temperature above 50K. The magnetic susceptibility is nearly temperature independent above ∼80K; below 50K it shows extremely small Curie–Weiss-like behavior. Temperature dependence of the Knight shift in vanadium NMR shows a broad peak around 80K. |
