The exhaustion of design options to increase the service life of components has led to the development of new methods to improve their material properties during operation under various loading conditions. Laser shock peening (LSP) induces a compressive residual stress field that prevents fatigue crack initiation and propagation in components. The characteristics of the laser impact and the treatment patterns play an important role in the efficiency of LSP application for fatigue property improvement. This work is devoted to the experimental examination of two LSP patterns to reveal the most optimal scheme from the point of view of fatigue life improvement. The proposed LSP pattern allowed the fatigue life of the semicircular notch specimens to be increased by one order of magnitude. The numerical simulation of the LSP was performed to visualize the residual stress field of the treated specimen after loading and to give an interpretation of the experimentally observed fatigue life improvement. |
