The rates of hydrolysis of ethyl p-substituted benzenesulfinates were determined in acidic and alkaline media; the rates were greater in the former with the sulfinates containing electron-releasing substituents, ?=-0.54 (20°C); and in the latter with the sulfinates containing electron-withdrawing substituents, ?=1.60. The mechanisms of the hydrolysis are discussed. |
