A Comparative Study on Effect of Welding Process on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Super Duplex Stainless Steels

Abstrakt: UNS S32750 grade, Super Duplex Stainless Steel alloy is utilized extensively in petrochemical processing plants and the oil and gas industry. This contains a substantial amount of chromium to reinforce solid solution and increase its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Although welding is the primary fabrication technique for many applications of steel, microstructural changes occur during welding cause the properties of the weldment to differ from those of the parent metal. In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the influence of Manual metal arc welding (MMAW) and Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) techniques on the mechanical properties of UNS S32750 alloy grade by analysing microstructural changes during welding and correlating the same with the mechanical properties. GTA welds exhibit superior mechanical properties than MMA welds because of increased austenization, slower cooling rate due to thermal cycle involved with this technique. The lower amount of brittle intermetallic phase formation in GTAW may also reason for the improved mechanical properties. Both welds are observed to be surpass the base metal in mechanical properties and enhanced microstructure.
