Is forest certification working on the ground? Forest managers perspectives from the northeast U.S.

Abstrakt: •Forest managers from the northeastern U.S. were surveyed for their perceptions of forest certification programs (FCP).•Social license (reputation) was the most important reason for enrolling in FCP.•Most agreed on the need to reduce the frequency of management surveillance audits.•Region- and stakeholder-specific certification standards could improve FCP.•Challenges of FCP included a lack of price premiums, high costs, and complexity.
