Abstrakt: We have evaluated the efficiency of the 3-removal Zippin method with AC-electrofishing to estimate fish numbers in several sites of two dark-water, low conductivity streams of the Brazilian Pampa. These two streams, Campus and Barbará, were dominated by fish of the families Characidae and Cichlidae although we recorded up to 38 and 33 different species respectively. Capture data for single cases (number of specimens of a particular species, site, month, and stream) fitted the removal method in 77.8 % and 93.5 % of the 268 and 126 different cases of Campus and Barbará. Both catchabilities (p) and the percentage of significant cases (% SC) were most similar to those obtained for six different transparent-water palearctic streams dominated by cyprinids. Therefore, we suggest that these techniques and methods are suitable for successful assessment of fish numbers in streams of the neotropical region.
