Effects of prostaglandins E1, E2, A1, F1α on contractile responses of hamster seminal vesicle smooth muscles to stimulation by epinephrine, norepinephrine, and acetylcholine are compared. Hamster seminal vesicles provide suitable preparations for comparisons of physiological actions of these pharmacological agonists. Pairs of seminal vesicles from a single animal respond synchronously in the muscle bath preparation, and were used in these tests. Potentiation of the responses to these stimulants occurred in the presence of all the prostaglandins tested. The relative effectiveness of the potentiation was estimated on a µg/ml. dose basis to approximate a 1:2:5:10 ratio for E1, E2, A1, and F1α, respectively, for epinephrine and norepinephrine. PGE2was about as effective as PGE1in potentiating responses to acetylcholine stimulation. These results approximate and confirm those reported by Naimzada (1969) for potentiating actions of these PGs on the responses of guinea pig seminal vesicles to epinephrine and norepinephrine or to nerve stimulation. Further studies are in progress relating to the actions of prostaglandins in the regulation of neuromuscular function in male reproductive organs. |
