The minimally invasive technique of autologous fat injection in the head and neck is generally considered to be a safe procedure with few complications. We report a case of malignant middle cerebral artery infarction, managed with decompressive hemicraniectomy, following autologous fat injection for the treatment of velopharyngeal incompetence. Perioperative stroke in nonvascular surgery is rare but is associated with high mortality and disability, irrespective of the cause. The potential difficulties in the diagnosis of perioperative stroke, the proposed mechanism post autologous fat injection and its management are reviewed. |
