Abstrakt: Joint contractures have been a therapeutic problem for centuries. Their causes may include inflammatory joint disease, osteoarthritis, burns, and central nervous system spasticity. Contemporary surgical techniques, particularly total knee arthroplasty, have been successful in treating contractures in many patients with joint disease. Surgical release, after careful preoperative evaluation, also has been successful in many cases of spasticity. Conservative methods are described in this article and should be tried first.
