Four experiments investigated the pigeon’s ability to earn food by pecking at specific keys within a 3 × 3 spatial array, given that the position of the S + stimuli varied as a function of time. In Experiment 1, three of the nine keys of the response panel displayed a red hue (S + ). The other six keys presented a green hue (S−). Every tsec, the S + stimuli moved up one horizontal row on the keys. Three pigeons were trained to peck each of the three S + stimuli before any of them had been present on an upper level key for tsec. Pecks to S − stimuli also counted as errors. The birds made few errors with t> 1 s. Each bird developed a particular, stereotyped three component response sequence that it emitted during the majority of the trials. In Experiment 2, these sequences were maintained although different stimulus arrays and novel S + and S− stimuli were presented; and perseveration in these sequences cost reinforcers. Short tvalues were employed in Experiment 3 in an effort to reduce response stereotypy. Although performance accuracy (errorless trials) decreased to about 50%, the dominant sequences remained intact. Experiment 4 required the birds to peck an additional key in order to increase tbefore pecking the S+ stimuli. Each bird reliably pecked this key and then emitted the dominant response sequences that had emerged earlier. |
