Abstrakt: The New York State Legislature enacted an Amendment to the Penal Law, in 1970, which permitted legal abortions through the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy. To implement the abortion program, a protocol was created to investigate new drugs and new techniques, especially as they related to the early second-trimester termination of pregnancy. The protocol which is the basis for this report utilized prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α). Thirty-seven patients were selected for intra-amniotic injection of PGF2α. Complete abortion occurred in 83.8 per cent of these patients studied. The average total dosage of PGF2αwas 61.2mg. PGF2αwas administered with the use of an extraovular technique to 34 patients. The termination of pregnancy between the thirteenth and sixteenth weeks, the so-called “interim abortion,” was studied specifically. Coagulation studies revealed an increase in platelets, fibrinogen, factor V, and factor VIII. This is in contrast to the decrease observed following injection of hypertonic saline.
