Abstrakt: The university can play a major role in implementing the concept of sustainable development—a model of development ‘that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ (WCED, 1987) in teaching, research, extension and public services. While teaching and research is normally carried out within the university, public service in the form of participation in development planning needs collaboration with national or regional planning agencies. At the provincial level, the regional university, such as Hasanuddin University, needs to maintain a partnership with the regional province in implementing the concept of sustainable development. This paper outlines the role of Hasanuddin University through its Environmental Study Centre (ESC-UNHAS) in implementing the concept of sustainable development in South Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesia.
