TO THE EDITOR: —The communication entitled "Methyldopa for Treatment of Hypertension" in the May 25 issue of The Journal (184:616) stated that the authors "hesitate to advocate other than investigational use of this drug..."Reports reaching us indicate many of your readers understand this to mean that methyldopa ( Aldomet) is still to be reserved for investigational use.The facts are that methyldopa has been commercially available as Aldomet throughout the free world since January, 1963. An effective New Drug Application was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in late 1962, several months prior to the publication in question. It has been ascertained that the paper had been submitted to The Journal at a time when methyldopa was still under extensive clinical trial and when such a statement was appropriate. Significantly, in presenting the same paper at the June AMA meeting, the authors corrected this statement. |
