TO THE EDITOR. —May I suggest an addendum to the comprehensive and highly instructive article "Retinal Entoptic Phenomena" by Dr. Stephen F. Bowen, published in the May issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology. THE PINWHEEL PHOSPHENE IN CHOROIDAL DISEASE For more than 40 years I have been aware of a phenomenon which has puzzled me, not only because it is not mentioned in the ophthalmologic literature, as far as I can see, but also because of the difficulty to explain it.Patients suffering from choroidal or retinochoroidal disease of various etiologies including myopic peripapillary-macular degeneration, occasionally describe a phosphene which they compare to the spinning of a small pinwheel or a very small brightly shining fan. It occurs at the time and in the area where the pathologic process seems to be in progression and could, in some cases, be ophthalmoscopically localized at the site of the progression or recurrence |
