In 1952 a young man undergoing operation for a herniated intervertebral disc in another hospital was the unfortunate recipient of an accidental injury to his right iliac artery, which ultimately required ligation. Since the fall of 1952 this patient has been given repeated surgical care at the Seattle Veterans Administration Hospital. The severe sequelae and unusual complexity of the difficulties following this accident prompted me to report this case, particularly in view of the fact that vascular restoration has recently been accomplished after a seven-year interval.Linton, in 1945, was the first to report on injuries to the abdominal vessels during disc surgery, and later reports by Holscher, by Harbison, Glass, and Ilgenfritz, by Mack, and by Sealey, Hughes, and Jahnke have substantiated the need for expedient and urgent surgical intervention to control further blood loss and restore vascular continuity.2-6,8 Missed diagnosis, delayed surgery, or failure to repair the |
