Hospital utilization was studied one year before and again two years after the opening of a neighborhood health center, to determine the effect of the health center on hospital use by residents of the community. Per capita admissions to the hospital affiliated with the health center increased by 56.1%. Study of a matched subsample of the community demonstrated a shift of use, as measured by hospital expenditures, to the affiliated hospital, with a slight decrease in the use of other hospitals. Hospital expenditures by this subsample increased substantially between the two years, suggesting an overall increase in hospital use by the community's residents.(JAMA 228:332-333, 1974) |
