MORE ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH CRUST, PETROGRAPHICALLY INTERPRETED FROM GEOPHYSICAL DATA

Abstrakt: There is a possibility that the water pressure at the ocean floors may have a much greater effect upon elastic moduli of rocks than the pressure about the same thickness of rock in the continents because the former pressure does not have any accompanying increase in temperature. One might express this more simply by saying that the high seismic velocities occur nearer the surface under the ocean basins because it is cooler there. The confirmation or denial of Afanas'yev's conclusions awaits more data on the effect of temperature on the elastic moduli of rocks under high confining pressure.Frank Hadsell
