Mechanical alloying during interaction between zinc powder and copper

Abstrakt: Abstract: We have investigated mechanical alloying by interaction of zinc powder with copper in a rotating drum. Grinding down of the powder particles and penetration of the chippings into the surface layers of the copper occurs in the early stages. The most disperse zinc chippings are dissolved during simultaneous plastic deformation of the copper and the zinc. Then a thin layer of the intermetallic compound γ−Cu5Zn8 is formed by reactive interdiffusion. We discuss the meachnisms for mechanical alloying.
