Abstrakt: This article discusses the development of public health legislation and reforms in Spain during the period between 1855 and 1923. The authors comment on the focus on public sanitation and hygiene at the time and describe the legal and political developments in these fields on both a local and federal level. Particular focus is given to the frequent cholera outbreaks in the Balearic Islands of Spain and the policies enacted in an attempt to curb their spread. The decline in the mortality rate over this period is also examined.
