Abstrakt: Background: Ameloblastoma is a benign lesion with a locally invasive behaviour. Ameloblastoma is one of the most common odontogenic neoplasm. The objective of this study is to determine the pattern of ameloblastoma cases that were treated in Hospital University Sains Malaysia (HUSM) since 1997 - 2011. Materials and Methods: Retrospective record review on occurrence of ameloblastoma treated in HUSM from 1997 until 2011. A total of twenty-two (22) cases were diagnosed histologically as ameloblastoma. One investigator examined the records and the following information sought; sociodemographic characteristics such as age and gender, site of lesion, symptom and size of the tumour, radiographic aspect and characteristics and histopathological information. Radiographic findings were recorded from Orthopantomograms (OPGs). Results: Study showed that all patients diagnosed with ameloblastoma were Malays. Female to male ratio is 1:1.75. The patients' age were ranged from 14 to S3 years old with average of 29.5. It showed that ameloblastoma most frequently found in the mandible (95.5%) whereas only one case (4.5%) was detected in the maxilla. The size was between 2.3 cm to 14.4 cm with median of 8.0 cm. Most of the surgical treatment was hemimandibulectomy (59%) followed by segmental resection (22.7%) and marginal resection (9.2%). Conclusion: Ameloblastoma is an odontogenic tumor with locally invasive and high tendency of recurrence. Long term follow up is therefore crucial. In general, annual follow up for at least 10 years is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
