Abstrakt: Stabilization pond systems are considered among the most economical wastewater treatment methods under favorable conditions of land availability. However, the efficiency of treatment is generally low and appropriate and timely maintenance and de-sludging are required. As part of an investigation into the potential success of a recent U.S.$11 million emergency short term improvement program for the rehabilitation of the As-Samra Wastewater Treatment Plant in Jordan, wastewater samples were collected, analyzed, and compared to test results taken prior to the improvement program. The improvements to the plant aimed at increasing both the loading capacity and treatment efficiency and included the removal of sludge, construction of new ponds, an inlet structure, and inter-pond pipelines; installation of odor control and chlorination facilities; and the installation of surface aerators. The water quality tests conducted were compared to the 4-year record ofthe plant prior to improvement. The comparison yielded test results that indicated improvement in BOD, COD, and TSS, while no improvements were observed in TDS and Ammonia. It is argued that this data inputneeds to be used along with other decision factors to select the optimal solution if further long term improvements are envisioned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
