The article reflects on the group of psychological disorders known as attachment disorders, specifically Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), in which children are unable to develop and benefit from lasting relationships. The author validates the idea that lack of attachment relationships from a young age negatively impacts children, but challenges the construct of RAD and questions whether children suffering from attachment issues benefit from pathological classification of their symptoms. In conclusion, the author claims that, rather than continuing to adopt increasingly narrow views of normal behavior and widening views of pathological behavior, social and economic reform is a more effective use of resources to prevent poverty and ensure more stable home environments and healthy development for young children. |
