Abstrakt: This study investigated the past special education programs and services provided to children and youth who later became incarcerated. Participants in this study were inmates from a medium security state correctional facility in the southwest region of the United States. All inmates involved in this study were identified as having a disability and qualified for special education services. Their ages ranged from 18 to 24 years of age. Through file reviews and inmate interviews, data were collected to determine their background special education experiences. Results indicated that the level and intensity of special education services were clearly inadequate to meet the needs of these individuals during their years in public education. Recommendations regarding data results are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
