The article focuses on the growing numbers of women prisoners in Australia as well as the need for positive ways to improve women's prison conditions. It analyzes specific difficulties encountered by women in Australian prisons. Several studies over the past years have depicted the increasing female imprisonment numbers in the country. However, women stay a small proportion of total Australians imprisoned. Factors that contributed to the growing female imprisonment include a trend towards a lengthier sentence for women, truth in sentencing legislation, and increased frequency of drug offences. It discusses issues affecting female inmates such as illegal drugs, lesbianism, and medical care. |
