The article explores the causes and consequences of bacterial resistance. It describes the general properties of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance, and highlights some studies from other specialties. The relationship between bacterial resistance and outcome in ophthalmic infections is examined. The complicated interactions between host, pathogen and therapy, and the common reasons for treatment failure are also discussed. |
