Abstrakt: The article presents an exploration into the debate surrounding the unification of the divided Methodist churches in the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century and the theological and social views of the Southern Methodist bishop John Carlisle Kilgo. Details are given contextualising the conditions of U.S. Methodism leading up to Kilgo's lifetime, highlighting the initial break over slavery. An overview of the ecclesiastical career of Kilgo as a preacher and bishop is also given. Kilgo's advocacy for the denomination's unification in his earlier years is contrasted with his later opposition to the movement, particularly in consideration of his championing of individualism and concerns of Northern cultural dominance over the Southern communities.
