THE MARK I. JACOBS FAMILY: A DISCURSIVE OVERVIEW.

Abstrakt: The article offers information on the Mark Israel Jacobs family, one of the early Jewish families of the West. At the University of Arizona Library and the Arizona Historical Society, a large accumulation of the family's letters and memorabilia has been preserved. Born in Poland in the eighteenth century, Israel Jacobs, Mark's father migrated to England and settled in Manchester in 1828. His marriage to Hannah Solomon led to twelve children. During the early 1840s, Mark I. Jacobs run a clothing shop in Ashton-under Lyne but faced bankruptcy and robbery of questionable circumstances. The family escaped to Baltimore, Maryland and settled in San Diego, California by 1851. A newspaper and periodical depot was opened by Jacobs in San Diego during the mid-1850s.
