The article presents a tribute to the Iowan mayor John F. Lacey and his political accomplishments in wildlife protection and advocacy. Details are given noting how uncommon wildlife conservation legislation was in the West up to the beginning of the 20th-century and a description is given highlighting the first efforts by Lacey to legally protect the bird population of Iowa and then at the Federal level through work with the U.S. Congress. It is suggested that Lacey's initial efforts marked the beginning of the wildlife conservation movement in the nation. |
