Although we know a great deal about what female police officers are subjected to in their male-dominated, masculine environment, we know very little about the dialectical tensions they may face and how they communicatively manage these tensions. Using dialectical theory and qualitative research methods, we interviewed fifteen female police officers from four different police departments and found these women voiced three dialectics and four sub-dialectics in regard to their work and life; 1) separation-integration dialectic with the sub-dialectics work-life and denying-embracing femininity, 2) supportive-unsupportive work environment dialectic with the sub-dialectics empowering-disempowering language and sexuality as an asset-liability and, 3) reporting-withholding harassment dialectic. The women were determined to be managing the tensions in various functional and dysfunctional ways by enacting both resistance and humor tactics. Implications of the findings and areas of future research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
