Abstrakt: An essay about the works of African-American folklorist John Mason Brewer is presented. Brewer is one of 20th century's premier African-American folklorists who understood the normative function of African-American folktales and their importance as both presentational and representational performance. His collection of African-American folktales is regarded as an historical commentary on racial relations. These collections of folktales are vibrant depictions of a community searching for its own identity.
