This article focuses on the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1988 in Great Britain in relation to closed-circuit television (CCTV) filmmaking. Under the Act, personal data refers to any information relating to an identified or identificable natural person. Thus, there is a need for all people other than the protagonist to be rendered unidentifiable on the data obtained from the CCTV operators. The filmmaker needs to establish a rule for the handling of footage delivered with ineffectual masking or blurring. The Act also requires that the operator's name and contact details are to be noted for every camera used. In addition, the filmmaker needs to establish a set of rules for handling the various formats in which the data may be sent. |
