Abstrakt: An encyclopedia entry for mosquitoes is presented. They are small flying insects and are related to other members of the other Diptera, the two-winged flies. There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide. They thrive in a variety of habitats, ranging from deserts or below sea level to high mountain meadows at elevations of 3,000 meters or above. The species of importance from the standpoint of public health are contained in the subfamilies Anophelinae and Culicinae.
