The article discusses changes regarding the design of patient rooms. It is noted that the changes are brought about by the trend toward patient focused care and the rise in ambulatory care emphasizing on the patient, family and community which is evident in the redesign of public areas and rooms. A description and the evolution of the patient room from the early 1950s to the 1990s as well as changes to various hospital facilities including the pediatric room, the intensive care unit (ICU) room and the medical/surgery room are presented. |
