Abstrakt: Defining specific mutations in familial human neurodegenerative diseases has allowed researchers to make animal models of the diseases through directed genetic approaches. These studies help address the molecular mechanisms of disease, and provide the foundation toward therapeutics. Modeling human neurodegenerative diseases in invertebrates has revolutionized the field in such a way that both reverse and forward genetic approaches are leading to the discovery of new players in neurodegeneration. This review focuses on fruit fly and nematode models of human neurodegenerative diseases, with emphasis on how these models have provided new insights into aspects of human disease.
