A new application of the theory of Markov processes to the characterization of fractals is presented. We show under which condition distinct stochastic processes of a cascade lead to multifractal scaling behavior. We apply our method to analyze the spatial disorder of the velocity field of fully developed turbulence and the roughness of a gold film of granular-like structure. The results obtained from these experimental data are compared with results from synthetic data of a fractal basin boundary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
