Abstrakt: Recent high-speed networks provide new features such as DMA and programmable network cards. However standard network protocols, like TCP/IP, still consider a more classical network architecture usually adapted to the ethernet network. In order to use the high-speed networks efficiently, protocol implementors should use the new features provided by recent networks. This article provides an advanced study of both hardware and software requirements for high-speed network protocols. A focus is made on the programming model and the steps involved in the transfer's critical path. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
