Abstrakt: The article offers reflections on the role of leadership and opposition political parties in contemporary Africa. It cites the re-emergence of political pluralism and political opposition in the early 1990s following the liberalisation of politics in many countries. Leadership is defined in this article as a pattern of behavior or a personal quality. The status of opposition leaders is recognised in law as is the case with the South African government after 1994. It says that the foremost challenge facing opposition leaders is to make sense of the environment in which they have to operate and convey their understanding of this environment to their supporters and potential supporters.
