Isomorphism is a foundational concept in the neo-institutional literature and yet, to date, our understanding of it as an organizational process remains to be fully developed. Toward that goal, this paper proposes a model that specifies the people and activities that together constitute isomorphic behavior. Our model is based on case analysis of two isomorphic organizational practices-call-centers and commercial outplacement. Using interviews, field observation, and primary source documents, we show how entrepreneurial consultants in the telephony and outplacement industries acted as intermediary agents in establishing new practices by framing environmental changes as problems that required solutions to which they claimed proprietary access. Our analysis of call-centers and commercial outplacement contributes to the organizational scholarship by clarifying both the activities and agents involved in isomorphic change. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
