Abstrakt: The article discusses the scientific and policy considerations on the health risks of disinfection by-products (DPBs) in drinking water in the U.S. The presence of DBPs in drinking water was first reported in 1974, wherein it was linked to the process of chlorination. It was discovered that DBPs cause cancer on the digestive and urinary tracts. The Environmental Protection Agency has already regulated the use of the treatment while research are performed on its effects and alternative solutions. However, limitations on the study and the lack of cooperation are just adding up to the problem. Presently, the process of chloramination is used, however, this solution is for temporary use only and thorough studies are needed to bring out permanent and long-term solutions.
