Abstrakt: Three women diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome received photobiomodulation therapy for the treatment of xerostomia. The photobiomodulation sessions were conducted once a week for 15 weeks, involving the irradiation of 18 points on the parotid, 12 on the submandibular, and 8 on the sublingual glands, with a dose of 2 J/cm2 per point. Salivary flow rate and a xerostomia questionnaire were assessed over a period of 6 months. After completing the 15 sessions, all patients exhibited an increase in salivary flow rate. However, this effect was not sustained after 6 months. Two of the patients reported an improvement in saliva sensation, but one experienced a decrease in this sensation once the treatment concluded. Xerostomia remained unchanged in two patients but showed improvement in one after the treatment ended. This study suggests that photobiomodulation therapy may temporarily boost salivary flow rate during treatment but does not provide lasting relief from xerostomia. To confirm the potential benefits of this therapy, further controlled clinical trials involving larger patient populations are required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
