Zakaria Ibrahim, the founder of the Egyptian band El Tanbura and an icon of the Egyptian revolution, has passed away from a heart attack. Ibrahim was born in Port Said and was passionate about the plucked simsimiyya, a popular lyre in the canal region. He formed El Tanbura in 1989 to revive traditional music and preserve cultural values. The band performed resistance songs, songs about the simsimiyya, and Sufi religious subjects. They gained international recognition, performing in Paris and the UK, and even played in Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring. Ibrahim also ran the El Mastaba Center in Cairo and supported other Egyptian folk groups. [Extracted from the article] |
