The article reports that the testicular volumes of 817 adult (non-Down's syndrome) institutionalized males were calculated. A physical feature which has been reported commonly in males with various mental retardation (MR) syndromes is abnormal testicular size and the researchers suspect that testicular volume may be an important clinical marker in delineating cytogenetic disorders. A testicular volume of 10 ml or less (fifth percentile) is found in only 5% of the normal male population. The number of institutionalized males with testicular volumes between 10-25 ml is approximately fourfold greater than males in the general population. |
