To figure out where petrels, storm petrels, shearwaters andprions--members of the Procellariiformes order--once lived,Bellvé gathered up these historic records and scoured oldnewspapers for mentions of seabirds. Whitehead reached her arm into the burrow, nearly ametre deep, and extracted a dead Cook's petrel, a seabird thathad not bred on the mainland for perhaps a century or more.
