The idea of greening the chemical industry as a solution to pollution prevention has gained much popularity over the past few decades. The development of alternative green and sustainable processes has significantly contributed to reducing risks and hazards associated with the practice of chemistry. In this context, the Green Chemistry Challenge Awards, an annual award instituted by the US Environmental and Protection Agency (US EPA) along with the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute, has, over the years, encouraged and recognized chemical technologies that incorporate the various principles of green chemistry. The award has successfully recognized novel solutions to real-world environmental problems and thereby has significantly contributed to greener approaches to the design, manufacture and use of chemicals.
