| Abstrakt: | The article focuses on Mary Anne Spate or ‘granny Spate' as she is known in our family was born in 1849 and lived and worked in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire a large, predominantly working-class, coal mining town situated between Derby and Nottingham. Topics include Granny Spate has lived in a house along the banks of the Erewash canal, and Granny Spate's work as a midwife often saw her returning home at all hours and in the pitch black of night. |
