Abstrakt: Introduction: The rise of human life expectancy, the prolongation of survival and the amplification of the ambulatory care has rendered informal caregiving an integral section of the healthcare system in many western countries. In Greece informal caregiving is widely observed in hospitals. The aim of the study is i) to collect information from the caregivers regarding their experience in informal caregiving and their commentary and ii) to understand in depth the participants' attitude, to explore their understanding and expectations and to gain insight in the social structure that supports its existence. The study further aims to explore its potential and to reveal certain aspects and problems of the informal caregiving. Materials and methods: Fifteen informal caregivers (spouses, parents, children) of patients of the 'physical medicine and rehabilitation' clinic were interviewed. The interviews were conducted in a predefined room in the hospital. Content analysis showed three major areas that are relevant to i) the impact of being an informal caregiver on the caregiver's life itself ii) the expectations the caregivers have from the hospital management or the ministry of health, in order to reduce the amount of time they spend with the patients iii) their collaboration with the hospital nursing staff. Results: Informal caregivers are having difficulties to balance their working and family responsibilities as well as to manage with their emotions. The simultaneous reduction in financial resources and the emotional involvement as a caregiver minimizes the strength, the courage and the time of the informal caregivers. Conclusions: Informal caregivers are becoming of great importance. They cannot replace the nursing professionals, still they will be taking care of the patient -- relative for the rest of his life. The capability of the informal caregiver will draw the line between formal and informal caregiving, apart from the patient's severity of course. An effective cooperation between the professional nursing staff and the informal caregivers will reduce the latters' burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
