The study was conducted in Wayanad district in Kerala with the objective of gender-wise participation, decision making and time taken on farm activities among goat farmers of Wayanad district, Kerala by using simple random sampling method, sixty goat farmers comprising a fl ock size between one to twenty goats were selected. The study revealed that majority of the goat farmers were women and out of which most of them were supported by male family members in various activities as well. Although, women participated to a certain extent with an observable gender based variation in decision making. In fact, there was an improvement in their livelihood after undertaking small farming using spare time at home. It was further noted that if there was more involvement of Women Self Help Groups like Kudumbasree in goat rearing, they might had the capacity to completely undertake the venture their own. It was suggested that there was an imperative need for imparting entrepreneurial training to the respondents in goat farming along with provision of resources such as good quality breeds, grazing land, feed, market and veterinary care for women self-help groups. It was further noted that there was a correlation between correct decision makings and the quality of production and its impact on other natural resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
