The article discusses the daily struggles and challenges faced by elementary school teachers in the U.S. during the Great Depression as recorded in the 20th century periodical "Grade School Teacher." It examines correspondence between grade school teachers and "Grade School Teacher" editor Florence Hale, particularly in Hale's column entitled "Ask Florence Hale." It discusses advice dispensed to teachers concerning economic frugality, providing for classroom materials, and the encouragement of travel and professional development. The article also discusses the social conditions of teachers in the U.S. during the Great Depression and states that most grade school teachers were women. |
