Abstrakt: The article discusses the biology and pharmacology of somatostatin (SST) and its analog, octreotide in inhibiting the secretion of growth hormone. Some of the disorders treated by octreotide included variceal hemorrhage, hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) occurring in patients with advanced cirrhosis and hypoglycemia due to sulfonylurea or quinine toxicity. Also discussed is the chylous pleural effusion which occurs due to the disruption or obstruction of the thoracic duct.
