Abstrakt: The article surveys archaeological and historical research on the Christianization of and early church history in the Rhineland region of Germany, from the 3rd through 8th centuries. The author highlights problems in the historiography concerning the description and interpretation of archaeological finds and historical sources. Issues discussed include archaeological excavations of early medieval church buildings, their dating, and the history of the Palatine Chapel of Saint Mary in Aachen, Germany, built by Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne.
